Copyright

registration services.

Protect your written works, software, artwork, music, videos, and all types of creative works with clear proof of ownership, handled by a team of intellectual property experts.

What is copyright?

Rights that arise immediately upon the creation of a work.

Copyright is the exclusive right granted by law to creators of literary, artistic, musical, film, sound recording, or other creative works. This right arises immediately upon completion of the work and is protected by law without the need for registration.

However, “notifying the Department of Intellectual Property of your copyright” will provide you with a certificate clearly stating the creation date and the identity of the creator. This serves as preliminary evidence to prove ownership in case of disputes.

Generally, copyright protection lasts for the creator’s lifetime plus 50 years after the creator’s death.

Who should provide copyright information?

  • Writers, designers, photographers, and artists who need proof of ownership of their work.
  • Software companies that need to protect their source code or developed applications.
  • Producers of media, music, films, or digital content who need protection against infringement.
  • Brand owners with logos or graphic designs who need additional proof beyond trademarks.
  • Those who wish to officially license or sell their work.

Types of Copyrighted Works

There are nine types of works protected by copyright.

Thai law clearly categorizes creative works. Our team can help identify which category your work falls into.

Books, articles, poems, and computer programs.

Musical composition

Melody, lyrics, and arrangement.

fine arts

Painting, sculpture, printmaking, architecture, photography.

Audiovisual materials

Videotape: A disc containing a continuous sequence of images.

Dramatic works

Other work in the fields of literature, science, and art.

Any other creative work that does not fall into the above categories but is classified in the fields of literature, science, or art.

Things to know before reporting.

What is covered by copyright law?

Not covered?

Copyright protects “the expression of ideas,” not the ideas themselves. Our team will help assess whether your work qualifies for protection before you file a notification.

It is not considered a copyrighted work.

  • Ideas, processes, procedures, systems, methods of use or operation; concepts, principles, discoveries, or theories.
  • Daily news and facts that are purely informational in nature.
  • Constitutions, laws, regulations, rules, announcements, orders, decisions, or judgments of government agencies.
  • Translations or compilations of the above issued by government agencies.

Things to watch out for before submitting.

  • Works that are not original creations but are copied or adapted from the work of others without permission.
  • Works created by employees in the course of their work must clearly state the ownership of the copyright.
  • Works created entirely using artificial intelligence without any human creative contribution.
  • Titles, product names, or short slogans that are often not subject to copyright (trademarks should be used instead).

Why do I need to provide information?

The benefits of copyright infringement.

Although copyright is automatically created, providing information makes it much easier to prove and exercise those rights.

Evidence confirming the creation date.

A notification certificate clearly stating the submission date serves as initial evidence in case of disputes.

It becomes easier to sue violators.

Having official documentation confirming ownership reduces the burden of proof when suing for copyright infringement.

Entering into a licensing agreement provides greater confidence.

Used in licensing agreements or when selling licenses to business partners to ensure clarity of ownership.

Coverage abroad.

Thailand is a signatory to the Bern Convention. Work protected in Thailand is also protected in other parties to the Convention.

Add value to your work and business.

Proof of ownership of copyrights is an intangible asset that adds value to a business and attracts investors.

Prevent violations in advance.

Providing evidence of public disclosure of information can deter those who might consider plagiarizing to some extent.

Check for completeness of documents.

There is no objection procedure.

Received a copyright notification letter.

Obtain a certificate stating the creator’s name, type of work, and the date the information was submitted as proof.

This can be used as immediate evidence.

The time from filing to receiving the certificate is approximately 1–2 months, much faster than patents and trademarks because there are no content review or objection notices.

Coverage period

The duration of copyright protection depends on the type of work.

The law prescribes different protection periods depending on the type of work and the creator. Our team can help calculate the correct protection period.
